Derby CAN allocates small budget to Hear Me Now Management to throw an event at their supported creative hub: The Maypole Bar and Theatre in Derby.
In January 2023, Hear Me Now had the honour of throwing this free event to celebrate all the underground rappers in Derby, while also amplifying a local venue space and “hidden gem” in Derby. This event acted as a follow up from community feedback received as a result of “Hello World: The Show” back in November.
Approached by Derby CAN, in November 2022, we were asked what creative community needs support. Having worked with rap artists and seeing the need for such events in Derby, we pointed out that there are numerous underground rappers that are not getting the recognition they deserve nor do they get the same opportunities as singers in the area. Let’s face it, it’s not like rap artists are often booked to serenade you at a restaurant like singers are.
venue – The Maypole, Bar and Theatre
We were thrilled to experience the venue reaching capacity. With the events room being at risk of over-capacity, crowds had to be guided towards the front room bar area, with some even enjoying the event from the outside garden area.
Donna Briscoe-Green (venue owner) was moved, explaining that she was likely to have to close down soon – due to cost of running the venue in the current climate – but was grateful to see the venue thriving in it’s full glory before doing so. We can only thank Donna for her constant faith in our abilities at Hear Me Now and hope to still work with her again in some capacity.
